  1. I just got my interview done and all my questions asked and recorded, on Tuesday. I now need to finish my outline and force myself to listen to the recording even though I cringe at my own voice. I do have a well rounded idea of what my Profile will focus on. I think I did a good job of finding the information I need to write it. I just need to organize the outline in a way that makes sense with the angle, which changed a little bit but not too much. The angle was about the background coming into running a program, as well as educational format in teaching, how that has changed for my profile.

  2. For this journal, I will provide a quick status report on where I am in the profile project. I had asked Prof. Ahmida if he would be interested in having an interview/photo and profile written about him for my journalism class pretty soon after the project was laid out so I already have some background information from that quick meeting and have a more formal interview scheduled for Tuesday 4/2. My early workshop draft has been ready since Tuesday of this week, so I will continue to add to that. I was also able to sit down with one of his research assistants and a student who has taken many of his courses, Bella Caprio, and she was able to provide insights on how his research recognition has impacted UNE. Looking forward to the next two weeks or so before the workshop, I will add Bella’s content to my rough draft/outline, conduct the interview with Prof. Ahmida early next week, and spend the rest of that week finding the angle of the story and drafting a full workshop draft. If time permits, I would also like to add some comments from a few colleagues, and I think Prof. Susan McHugh would be willing to add some comments and expertise on research that would add great context.

  3. I think my profile piece is proceeding rather well. I have my primary interview scheduled for Thursday, I have some good background information and questions prepared for the subject. I’ve been working on my draft of the story, including an outline and some writing that can be done preceding the interview. I think the biggest things that need to be worked on in my profile is most likely figuring out the best way to present the information, in that I’d like to spend some time revising my profile structure to be both coherent and interesting. I additionally would like to conduct another interview, but I’m not sure who the best people would be in the faculty. I’m also nervous about the interview, in that I’m somewhat concerned about asking the right questions, getting all the information I need, and then taking that information and writing something that is generally interesting, well formatted, and that makes sense. However, I think I have the right tools, and I will try to use the interviewing techniques from the chapters we read.

  4. For my profile as far as planning and preparing I am all set. I know the direction I want my profile to go I have the questions lined up. I have been able to speak with Professor Roche about his willingness to work with me on this project and he’s on board. Now looking into next steps scheduling this interview would be a priority. in addition to maybe thinking of adding in an additional interview to make my piece well rounded maybe be something I start to plan for in the near future as well.

  5. With the profile project, I have interviewed Professor Brod, but I need to contextualize the recording to shape it into the profile. I also need to locate someone who has read the book and reach out to them to obtain another perspective on the publication. I feel I am in a decent spot right now, though I will need to work this weekend to turn the recording into a profile. I have done a fair amount of research, and I also have access to a podcast about Brod’s book that I will have to look into, but otherwise, I am not yet short on information. Moving into next week, I will be seeking reviewers of the book, and potentially reaching out to Islandport Press for a statement of some form.

  6. For the profile project, I’ve begun setting things in motion. I already approached Pam Morgan to be sure that she’s interested in being interviewed, and we are collaborating to find a time when we are both available for me to interview her. I’ve already taken notes on her background and comprised a list of questions that I think will generate interesting and engaging answers. Presumably the interview will happen next week, and following that, I will develop her answers into a draft article that will await peer review. I also am working on setting up an interview with a classmate who has had Pam for several courses and can provide some more insight into her expertise as well as her teaching style.

  7. As of right now, I have two interviews with my profile subject under my belt, and another scheduled for next week. In between then and now, I need to transcribe the interviews to text, and revise/edit my draft to include this information. Additionally, I need to formulate some more questions to ask my subject for the next interview. I also need to contact and interview some of my subject’s students, in order to get more perspectives in the project. I’d also like to incorporate some information about the classroom environment of Professor Labonte, so I have to curate those details as well. Overall, I think I have a good handle on the project right now, and I have a lot of ideas about where to take it from here. I’m finding that, because this profile will be longer than our other project, the more information I collect, the better off I’ll be.

  8. This past Wednesday I met with my profile person, Professor Quinlan, and conducted an interview reflecting on her career, work ethic and what it’s like teaching so young. I felt that the eight questions I asked were pretty well-rounded but there’s always the worry that the writer didn’t get enough information from the interview. I learned a lot about This professor’s background and how she connected with sociology and excelled at it early on. It was exciting to hear how she connected with her students and they naturally felt comfortable due to her age and similarities. Going forward I plan to get statements from other students, and perhaps dive deeper into how she got the job by going to the head hiring Department. Although having a lot of information from the initial interview, Quinlan is very academically and work driven. I feel like I have a lot of information surrounding that topic and not so much branching out to other topics. This project is focused on her so I may email with follow-up questions trying to get her to expand on different topics.

  9. For my profile I am in a place where I have to interview professor cripps. As well as a student and a faculty member about cripps. I have started my writing about cripps by giving some background information about him. I am planning to do my interview with Cripps next week as well as a student and finding a time with a colleague of his to interview as well. I also need to finalize an outline of exactly what path I want to take with a profile. I was thinking about taking the background he has had before he decided to get into teaching.

  10. Journal #16: Status Report: Where are you with the profile and what needs to happen next?

I believe that I am in a good place regarding the profile because I have already conducted my interview with Mrs. Faraday, I have my pitch done, I have my first 200 word draft completed and I have a title for the story. I feel confident in the direction that I am taking my profile and I feel that Mrs. Faraday provided a lot of useful information during the interview and that referring to the interview will be extremely helpful when crafting the profile. I also have done some separate background research on Mrs. Faraday that I believe will be helpful. I did a simple internet search for background information on Susan Faraday and found some useful information about her on UNE’s website and LinkedIn she even has an article written about her from NOAA. One thing that I wish I would have asked more questions about during the interview is how she is still connected to the organization she said she’s still an adviser for them but what does that entail? The next steps that I should take in the creation of the profile is to dig deeper for information online about Mrs. Faraday and the Semester at Sea organization and potentially asking her some follow up questions for things that I still need clarification on.

  11. Right now, all I need to do for the portfolio is to schedule a time to do the interview. It shouldn’t take any more than 30 minutes depending on how much time we take actually talking. I have all my questions written out too, and I can anticipate how much time we need based on what I know already. I’ve already done some research with regards to their current major. I do also need to formulate some extra questions for their professors and I also have to hunt down some seniors in their lab to interview as well. I should be fine though as I already have some prepared, I just feel like I probably could use some more. I believe professor Mohan is their professor and he’s relatively easy to hunt down as I’m already in the marine science center on Wednesdays anyway when he has free time.
